Sustainable Ports for the Blue Economy in the Western Indian Ocean: A regional Port Sustainability Performance Index

Lead Organisation:

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

Geography/countries:

WIO region

Principal Investigator:

Steven Weerts

Project Value:

USD $50,000

The development of a regional Port Sustainability Performance Index for the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Region is a transformative initiative, led by the CSIR, funded by WIOMSA, aimed at advancing sustainability practices across ports in the WIO region. This project focusses on adapting and scaling a Port Sustainability Performance (PSP) Index for application on a regional scale. This will equip port authorities and stakeholders with actionable insights to align planning and operations with sustainable development goals, and enable the transition to a Blue Economy.

In collaboration with the UNEP Nairobi Convention Secretariat, the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa, regional governments and port authorities, the project aims to align globally comparable sustainability goals with local and regional relatable performance indicators. By bridging the gap between science and decision-making, this initiative will provide a robust, indicator-based tool to monitor and drive sustainability improvements in ports. Further, this regional PSP Index will empower policymakers with evidence-based knowledge to inform enhancement of port operations while safeguarding coastal and marine ecosystems and societies.

Ultimately this project aims to position Western Indian Ocean ports as key players in advancing a sustainable Blue Economy in the region, fostering innovation, collaboration, and informed decision-making to protect one of the world’s most vital ocean regions.
