The Indian Ocean Islands Foundation (IOIF) is leading a project focused on identifying opportunities for utilizing ancestral, traditional, and modern land and sea-based practices to enhance resilience among communities in Mauritius, particularly along the east-southeast (ESE) coast. The primary goal of this initiative is to establish a multi-stakeholder Working Group that will address the complex social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities faced by at-risk communities in one of the most impoverished regions of the country, situated within an Upper Middle Income Small Island Developing State. This Working Group aims to identify mechanisms and resources that can bolster these communities’ capacity to adapt to ongoing and future challenges, thereby increasing their resilience. The project emphasizes a participatory and co-constructed approach to stakeholder engagement, bringing together diverse groups from various socio-economic backgrounds around specific resiliency challenges. The core of the Working Group will comprise local experts and scientists from universities and specialized bodies, while a broader, non-core membership will include civil society organizations such as NGOs and citizen-led platforms, representatives from the public and private sectors, and local residents of the targeted coastline. These stakeholders will contribute on a rolling basis, ensuring continuous input and diverse perspectives. The project will generate valuable outputs, including a multi-dimensional inventory of needs and vulnerabilities faced by at-risk communities, a catalog of traditional knowledge and practices held by these communities, and an inventory of their existing social and economic capabilities and opportunities. All these resources will be made freely accessible via an online platform, which is designed to be sustained beyond the project’s duration through the support of the SCALABLE grant. This platform aims to facilitate ongoing sharing and application of knowledge, ultimately informing better planning and resource allocation to address socio-economic, climatic, and environmental challenges. The initiative aspires to not only preserve traditional practices for current and future generations but also to demonstrate a replicable mechanism for resource distribution that can be applied to other geographic areas, thereby contributing to broader resilience-building efforts.
