Estuarize 2.0 is a project led by the Technical University of Mombasa. It is the second phase of the Estuarize-WIO project (2016–2019) that was funded by WIOMSA and generated substantial data and information on natural resource use and socioecological systems in estuaries.
Estuarize 2.0 will engage with stakeholders, develop custom-made monitoring, evaluation and estuary management tools and test them at selected estuaries in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa.
By establishing Estuary Working Groups (EWGs), a process to refine individual estuary monitoring and evaluation tools, build capacity to use the tools and derive and implement local management actions will be facilitated. EWGs will have broad stakeholder representation including scientific, local knowledge, resource user and governance participation. The anticipated outcome of Estuarize 2.0 is working towards future estuaries that function as sustainable socioecological systems managed by local EWGs with broad stakeholder participation and relying on scientific and local knowledge solutions to identified issues.
Partner institutes in Estuarize 2.0 are: the Oceanographic Research Institute in South Africa; Oceanographic Institute of Mozambique; the Centre for Marine Research and Technology of the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique; the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute; the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania; the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute; the Wildlife Research and Training Institute in Kenya; and the Norwegian College of Fisheries Science (UiT The Arctic University of Norway).
