CLiMPA

Western Indian Ocean marine protected area climate futures

Lead Organisation:

Tanzania Fisheries Research institute

Value of Grant:

USD 145,000

CLiMPA is hosted by the Tanzania Fisheries Research institute and led by the working group members. It aims to create a structured approach or framework for mainstreaming climate change data and information to inform the design, planning and management of marine protected areas (MPAs).

The transdisciplinary and stakeholder project will mainly engage marine park practitioners and the broader community associated with marine parks. The case study site for the project is in the Mafia Marine Park in the United Republic of Tanzania. Here the team will develop a transferable approach with which to improve the degree of climate change data and informaton in other MPA locations in the region. CliMPA endeavours to bridge the gap between climate science and MPA management, facilitating informed decision-making.  It also aims to support resilience in coastal communities and ecosystems across the WIO region, resulting in enhanced adaptation status and sustainable management practices in the face of climate change.

CLiMPA working group members are from: the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute; Tanzania Marine Parks and Reserves Unit–Mafia Island Marine Park; Alliance of Biodiversity and CIAT; Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) East Africa; the Climate Service Centre Germany (Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon); and Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
