Title of the Training: Training on Geospatial Technology Application for Sustainable Smart Coastal Cities
Year of the Training: 2019
Number of Participants: 26
Country: Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, and Tanzania
Subject: Cities & Coasts
Description of the Project:

The world’s urban population has been projected to more than double by 2050 with coastal cities playing a significant role in the urban equation. The trends in urban population growth call for careful analysis to identify the best possible options to leverage coastal cities in developing countries to sustainably deliver goods and services. The use of geospatial technology is at the center of the puzzle in ensuring sound planning and decision-making for attaining sustainable smart coastal cities. WIOMSA, in collaboration with Macquarie University and Hexagon Geospatial, conducted training on geographic information systems (GIS) tools for smart coastal cities in Mombasa Kenya from 2 to 7 December 2019. The workshop was attended by 26 trainees from different coastal cities in Africa including. The diverse group of professionals included aspiring geographers, urban planners, conservationists, researchers, and environmentalists who were linked through their proximity to the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). They underwent tutelage on a variety of remote sensing and GIS applications.
