| Description of the Project: | The “École Bleu Outremer (EBO) – Cap sur l’Océan Indien”, a multi-disciplinary, inter- professional and international fellowship opportunity, took place for the first time in the south- western Indian Ocean onboard French research vessel R/V Marion Dufresne between June 29 and July 27 2022. The Republic of France led it through the French National Research Institute for Ocean Science (IFREMER), supported by the French Ministry of Overseas, French Institute of Research for Development (IRD), WIOMSA, the University of La Réunion “Centre Universitaire de Formation et de Recherche de Mayotte” (CUFR), and maritime and art schools from the territories and metropolitan France. The two main (and first) legs involved more than 75 students from across the WIO region (WIOMSA sponsored ten) and metropolitan France in a training and knowledge exchange experience on ocean science subjects and seamanship, all of this while participating in a real-scale oceanographic mission. Young artists were also integrated into the EBO project to add yet another dimension. Leg 1 was a ten-day journey from La Réunion to Mayotte, making several stops at ecologically important seamounts. Leg 2 was based off the east coast of Mayotte and shadowed the MAYOBS mission that has been monitoring the active submarine volcano of Mayotte since 2019. |
