Western Indian Ocean Critical Habitats Outlook: Towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

Western Indian Ocean Critical Habitats Outlook: Towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

The WIO Critical Habitats Outlook is a key outcome of the GEF-funded WIOSAP project, implemented under the Nairobi Convention. It supports SDGs 14.2 and 14.5, aligns with the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and promotes innovative management approaches for marine conservation in the Western Indian Ocean. Building on past conservation efforts, the Outlook aims to reverse biodiversity decline in the region, supporting global commitments such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s goal to conserve at least 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. Developed through strong regional partnerships, including contributions from WIOMSA and the Marine Science for Management (MASMA) Programme, it provides essential insights into the ecological and socio-economic importance of critical marine and coastal habitats, identifies knowledge gaps, and offers scenarios for their future protection and sustainable use.

This publication serves as a vital resource for policymakers, conservation practitioners, and stakeholders working to safeguard the region’s rich biodiversity and ecosystem services. It evaluates the most important habitats, assesses current protection levels, and highlights opportunities for expanding conservation efforts across the WIO.
