Biography

Shakeel Yavan Jogee is a final-year PhD student at the University of Mauritius. He has contributed to research on the ecological, physiological and molecular characterization of coral diseases in the western Indian Ocean region, specifically around Mauritius, and the Rodrigues and Saint Brandon islands. A student member of WIOMSA since 2020, he is now involved in multiple community-based coastal management projects, including the establishment of voluntary marine conservation areas, coastal erosion and protection management and nursery-based coral restoration.

As country coordinator nominee for Mauritius he aims to work towards fostering collaboration between the different governmental, non-governmental and private institutions for research and the management of coastal and marine ecosystems. He would also like to facilitate and promote the transfer of knowledge, skills and technologies between the western Indian Ocean (WIO) region and Mauritius. His vision would be to promote and advocate for marine stewardship and include coastal communities in the management and conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems in Mauritius and the WIO.
