Biography

Dr Immaculate Sware Semesi is a skilled environmental scientist with 20 years’ experience in research, natural resource management and sustainable development. She has extensive expertise in managing diverse projects, budgeting processes, monitoring and evaluation, and administration. Currently, Sware serves as the Director-General of the National Environment Management Council where she oversees environmental governance and policy implementation at a national level.

She has also managed Tanzania’s marine parks and reserves where her leadership contributed significantly to the sustainable use and conservation of the country’s vital marine ecosystems. Her academic background includes over ten years as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Dar es Salaam, School of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries, where she contributed to marine science research and capacity building. Sware also served as a Member of Parliament for five years where she gained deep insights into the political sphere, enhancing her skills in policy formulation, lobbying, negotiation, lawmaking and national budget scrutiny.
