About the MarCOSouth Project

The MarCOSouth Project aims to maintain, further develop and provide a sustainable platform for local, institutional, human and technical capabilities in the African partner countries that include Namibia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa, through the development of services from models and data to meet user needs, in a bottom-up, user driven approach.

The project aims to empower a wide range of users in the public and private sectors through the application of regionally-optimized satellite observations and model-based forecasts in African marine and coastal domains.

Services being developed include

  1. Fisheries and Aquaculture with the following applications:
    • ABALOBI
    • Fisheries and Aquaculture
  2. Coastal Monitoring with the following applications:
    • Coral Bleaching
    • Water Quality
  3. Marine and Maritime with the following applications:
    • Ship traffic monitoring
    • Sea rescue tool

WIOMSA is a key partner assisting with the engagement of user groups in the WIO region as well as aspects of training and policy/impact engagement.
