For over 30 years, WIOMSA has been implementing capacity building programmes in the WIO region for marine and coastal practitioners, policy makers, coastal planners, academia through various means and at various levels in the WIO region.

Where we work

WIOMSA works with members, various partners and Governments with a view towards sustaining the use and conservation of marine resources across 10 countries of the Western Indian Ocean. The countries are: The island countries of the Western Indian Ocean. These are; Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion (France) and Seychelles and the maritime countries of the Eastern Coast of the African Continent; Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia, South Africa, and Tanzania.

Our History

WIOMSA is registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania and South Africa. While our role has evolved over time, our focus on working with members and partners to promote interdisciplinary marine and coastal science remains steadfast.

We have come of age, constantly innovating at every step to ensure that our founding mission of promoting marine science and management for the development of the WIO-remains as relevant today as it did many years ago.
