For over 30 years, WIOMSA has been implementing capacity building programmes in the WIO region for marine and coastal practitioners, policy makers, coastal planners, academia through various means and at various levels in the WIO region.

WIOMSA has been implementing various programmes since its creation in 1993. Our programmes aim to address global goals and targets with a particular emphasis on the intersection of SDG 14 and SDG 1, as well as the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Our History

WIOMSA is registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania and South Africa. While our role has evolved over time, our focus on working with members and partners to promote interdisciplinary marine and coastal science remains steadfast.

We have come of age, constantly innovating at every step to ensure that our founding mission of promoting marine science and management for the development of the WIO-remains as relevant today as it did many years ago.
