On Saturday 9th February an auction will be held at Zanzibar Palace Museum in Stone Town. Half pearls (so-called mabe pearls) produced in a pilot project within the SUCCESS mariculture program will be auctioned.
The first ever Zanzibar half pearls were harvested in November 14, 2007. Five of these pearls have been set in silver and one in gold, and will be auctioned. 40 unset half pearls from similar projects around the world have also been donated to the project and will be sold at the auction.
The production and sales of polished shell jewelry in the Fumba Peninsular has been going on since May 2006. The villagers from Fumba, Zanzibar, who participated in this pilot project for half pearl production are going to do an exhibition on pearl farming and shell polishing from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, in Zanzibar Palace Museum in Forodhani, Stone Town, Zanzibar. During the day polished shells and jewellery will also be sold.
