The course aims at providing knowledge on Scientific Method in Marine Ecology, focusing on research logical flow, basic sampling design and associated statistics, use of common statistical packages, reporting and scientific paper realization.
The course will be held at the Centre for Marine Research (CEPAM) Pemba, Mozambique 2 to 17 December 2007
The specific objectives of the course are:
i) To provide basic concepts of scientific method, such as questioning and formulation of
hypotheses, and their adequate testing in appropriately designed sampling or
experimental protocols
ii) to introduce the basic concepts of statistical procedures for the design and interpretation of experiments
iii) to expand the capacity for standard scientific outputting, such as scientific papers and presentations
iv) to apply these concepts in field exercises, increasing also the basic knowledge of the participants on coastal intertidal habitats
v) to help solve specific research or formative problems of young researchers, such as research plans and protocols, thesis structure and writing, etc.
Application process:
The number of participants to the Course is limited to 20 and a selection procedure will therefore be applied. Applicants meeting all the requirements will be fully funded, however those who meet only some of them will be partially funded. Applications should be submitted via email and should include: a maximum of a page explaining the current research activities and how will the course be of help for your career; a short CV (maximum of 3 pages) (including name, address, affiliation, date of birth, date of degree, contacts – telephone number and e-mail) and a reference letter from a senior scientist. The reference letter should preferably be sent directly by the
referee via e-mail.
