Date
27-31 October 2007, immediately after WIOMSA Symposium in Durban
Venue
Sea Sands Conference Centre, Greater St Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Co-coordinating hosts
Dr Jean Harris (Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife) and Dr Mandy Lombard (Marine Biology Research Centre, University of Cape Town)
Main objectives of course are to
• provide an overview of the whole process of conservation planning;
• introduce the key concepts behind systematic planning methods;
• demonstrate how software can help to solve real-world problems;
• introduce the operation of two widely used conservation planning software packages (C-Plan and MARXAN);
• describe case studies in marine environments;
• allow participants to bring their own data for discussion
WIO country participation
At least one applicant from each WIO country can be accommodated. During the course, these participants will work with existing spatial data from their own regions. In this way capacity will be built and remain in the WIO, enabling the initiation of country SCP projects and the capacity to contribute to a regional biodiversity assessment and development of a WIO spatial biodiversity conservation plan.
Pre-course requirements
1. Attend special discussion on the Friday 26th October at the WIOMSA Symposium, on Marine Systematic Conservation Planning initiatives in the WIO and southern Africa.
2. Consult with managers and scientists in-country to identify any existing spatial data that could be used in a pilot exercise during the course (guidance will be given as to the type of data that is required and appropriate data sets must be brought with to the course).
Funding opportunities
Successful applicants will have free course attendance, local transport, accommodation and catering. In addition, they may apply for funding for airfares.
