A Remote Sensing and GIS Training Workshop for Mapping and Characterization of Coral Reef Habitats and the associated threats will be held in 10-22 September 2007, Zanzibar Tanzania.
Participation
The course is organised by Institute of Marine Science together with several partners, targeting a maximum number of 14 persons, particularly marine scientists or coastal manages from the following countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Comoros and Seychelles. The scientists or coastal managers should either be currently engaged in coral reefs related projects or anticipating to be engaged in coral reef related projects in the near future. This is because, immediately after the training workshop the participants are expected to use the methodology developed in the existing coral reef related projects at their home countries.
Course structure
The duration of the training workshop will be 10 working days, i.e. 5 days for the Remote sensing component and 5 days for the GIS component.
1. The Remote sensing component will make use of IKONOS satellite imagery covering some of the important reefs in Tanzania using Bilko software where the following modules will be highlighted:
• Image types and resolutions
• Geometric correction
• Water column correction
• Techniques for mapping coral reefs
• Habitat classification
• Supervised image classification
2. The GIS component will make use of appropriate GIS software and local, national, and regional data sets for Tanzania and the WIO Region. The following modules will be emphasized during the lectures and practical sessions:
• GIS fundamentals and good practices.
• Building a vector GIS database
• Working with raster data (including satellite images) in GIS
• Data quality evaluation and basic data exploration
• Spatial analysis of coastal habitat
• Analysis using Raster data sets
• Vulnerability analysis
• Making meaningful maps
• Publishing data
